What Elder Guard can and can’t see

Elder Guard starts only after the Elder says yes. Here is what each person sees, in plain words.

Who sees what

By kind of information and by person. Each row links to the matching part of the privacy policy.

Who sees what, by kind of information
InformationThe Elder’s phoneA GuardianUs (Upton Software Ltd. Liability Company)
CallsOn Android it screens calls and blocks likely scam calls or reports them to Guardians. On iPhone it blocks the numbers you list and helps turn on Silence Unknown Callers. Call details stay on the phone, apart from reports sent to Guardians.By default, reports of likely scam calls on Android. Never the calls themselves.Nothing we can read. Reports to Guardians pass through our relay locked. Scam-number lists are downloaded by the phone itself.
TextsAndroid warns about likely scam texts by reading message notifications. On iPhone the app sorts likely scam texts from unknown senders into Junk and never reads texts.By default, likely scam texts only (Android). Seeing every text is a separate choice a Guardian turns on, and the Elder is told.Nothing we can read. Reports pass through our relay locked; we can’t open them.
EmailChecks one connected account for likely scams on the phone.Reports of likely scam emails by default.Nothing readable. Sign-in details for the connected account stay on the phone.
Links and websitesChecks links and web addresses against public lists on the phone.Nothing, unless the Elder asks about a link.Nothing readable. The lists come straight from their publishers.
“Is this safe?” questionsWhatever the Elder chooses to send. The question, what the Elder saw, and what worries them.Only the locked message in transit, deleted once delivered.
Account and subscriptionThe sign-in email.Their own account.Sign-in details, whether the account is a Guardian’s or an Elder’s, and which protected phones a subscription covers and until when.

End-to-end encryption, in plain words

When the Elder’s phone sends something to a Guardian, it locks it with a key only that Guardian’s phone has. It passes through our relay, a server that only passes messages on, still locked, and we can’t open it. Messages are deleted once delivered, and undelivered ones are deleted automatically.

This covers the features that exist today: reports, questions and answers between the Elder’s phone and the Guardians’ phones.

Public scam lists, checked on the device

Lists of reported scam numbers and dangerous websites come from public sources, such as the FTC. The Elder’s own phone downloads them. The check happens on the device: the check itself sends nothing to us. Like any website, the list publishers can see the phone’s internet address.

What we keep, where, and for how long

  • Your account: the email you sign in with, whether you are a Guardian or an Elder, and which protected phones a subscription covers. We also keep when that cover ends. It stays on our servers for as long as the account exists.
  • Messages between phones: on our relay, locked, until delivered, then deleted; undelivered ones are deleted automatically after a short time.
  • Texts, calls, emails, lists and settings: on the phones themselves. No readable content is stored on our servers.
  • Reports on a Guardian’s phone: Guardians choose how long forwarded reports are kept on their device (from “Do not save” up to one year). Items are deleted automatically when that period passes.
  • Subscription payments: handled by Google Play or the App Store; we see whether a subscription is active, not your card.

Retention, in the privacy policy

Delete your account and data, any time

Guardians: Settings, then “Delete account & data”. Elders: tap Settings, choose “Remove protection & delete data”, and tick “Also delete my account”. Deleting an account does not cancel a store subscription; cancel it in Google Play or the App Store. Or ask us by email.
